Apostille vs Notary scaled

The Difference Between Notarization and Apostille

Many clients confuse notarization and apostille services, but they serve different purposes and are often required for different legal situations.

Notarization is the act of verifying a signer’s identity and witnessing the signing of documents. This is typically used for documents being submitted within the United States, such as:

  • Power of attorney
  • Real estate deeds
  • Affidavits
  • Medical releases

Apostille, on the other hand, is used for documents that will be sent to foreign countries. It certifies the notary’s authority and makes the document legally recognized abroad—specifically in countries that are part of The Hague Apostille Convention.

Examples of documents that may need an apostille include:

  • Birth certificates
  • Marriage licenses
  • School transcripts
  • Corporate paperwork
